I woke up this morning with the eager anticipation of seeing snow on the ground. No snow. Not yet, anyway. I will have to wait a few more hours. Then the shocking news: Benazir Bhutto was assassinated only hours ago. “I am not a political person”. I have said this many times. But today I feel the sadness, and anger, of losing a major political leader. I don’t understand why people have to assassinate political leaders. Why not just vote against them? Why kill them, and others?
Bhutto became the first female prime minister in the Muslim world when she was elected in 1988 at the age of 35. She was deposed in 1990, re-elected in 1993, and ousted again in 1996 amid charges of corruption and mismanagement. Her father, who also served as prime minister, was executed in 1979 two years after his ouster in a military coup. She really had the potential to help her people and her country.
I wonder what will happen to Pakistan… I wonder what will happen to other potentially great leaders…. And while not on the same level of seriousness, and since I am not a political person, I wonder if it will snow today…
