SS: An Old Friend
This week I am in Alaska visiting an old friend – not my oldest, but an old and dear friend. I am enjoying the time with her and her family, the talks, the stories the kids tell, and the laughter. Her kids know more about plants and animals than I ever will. The 9-year old boy wants to talk about food chain cycles before dinner. The 6-year old girl's first question in the morning is, "Do you know about migration?" The books about dogs that I brought were a big hit. So far this week we have seen a bull moose and two bald eagles. My friend's husband left for a few days, so now we have more time to just talk, laugh and solve all the problems of the world. After story time and finally getting her kids to bed tonight, we sat side by side at her IKEA dining room table. We talked about mutual friends and what they are up to, and exchanged a lot of addresses (snail mail and email) and phone numbers, so that we don't lose touch with our other old friends. In our silliness, we also sent each other emails. We laughed about so many old stories and shared secrets, and other such nonsense. It is good to laugh with friends. It is after midnight now, and it is still light. I have a hard time adjusting to it never being quite dark. I have suffered all week from Alaskan Summer Insomnia, but I love the mountains, wildflowers, the beauty of this place, and visiting with my friend and her family. It is quite good to laugh with old friends.
