I gave my love a gift one day
A gift so special to me,
I said, "Take care of it, love it, protect it."
He said, "Don't worry, I'll love it, you'll see."
He took care of the gift, day after day,
He protected and loved it well.
It was dusted and polished and kept in fine shape
Right on the front of the shelf.
Then one day my love got distracted
and the gift did not get it's usual care.
There was no dusting or polishing or loving,
And soon the little gift sustained a little tear.
The gift was pushed to the back of the shelf
Gathering scratches and dust.
It was no longer polished or loved or protected,
It just sat there, feeling torn and unjust.
The shelf became cluttered, as shelved often do;
And accidents can happen, you see.
And it happened on day when the shelf was too crowded,
The little gift fell and broke in two.
I gave my love a gift one day
A gift so special to me.
"This is my heart, to love and protect."
He broke it, then returned the pieces to me.

Khambagirl, that was brilliantly moving! Kudos to you... it is not often that I stumble upon something that leaves me wiping a tear or two from my eyes!

Ah, so sad. How many times this has happened to so many of us...

Lovely poem. I guess we all need to be careful who we give our heart to as so many people are so very careless with another's heart.

Yeah, isn't that what happens to crushes? Very well written, especially the end.

I can feel your heart having been shatterred. Smooth writing and well-done "crush" with more than one meaning for the prompt!
